The Mount Sinai Cemetery Mosaic |
|
In 1982 Neil Boyle was commissioned to design a mosaic for the Mount Sinai Cemetery in Glendale, California. The piece depicts the history of the Jewish people in America from 1654 to the present. When the painting was finished it was sent to Italy where craftsmen transferred the design into a mosaic tile mural containing approximately 12 million pieces of venetian glass. Italian artisans mounted the tiles on something resembling wrapping paper on, approximately, one square foot irregular shapes. Once completed the segments were shipped to the United States, where the pieces were permanently installed, much like a jig saw puzzle, on the facade of the cemetery's central structure. It measures 145 feet long and 30 feet high. The entire project took a year and a half to complete, and was dedicated in 1984. The original painting is hung in the giftshop at the entrance to Mt. Sinai, and prints are available for the asking. |
